Believe it or not Phlebotomist are not licensed professionals. In fact a Phlebotomist does not even need to be certified. 9 times out of ten they will be certfied nationally, because most institutions will not hire them without knowing full well that they are capable of success in the field. A certification shows that the phlebotomist is trained in every facet that they need to be to enter the field. A license is a lawful grant that is administered by an offical agency, which the United States does not give out to phlebotomist.

Phlebotomy classes will prepare you to enter the exciting career of Phlebotomy. The Phlebotomy classes usually will entail Anatomy and Physiology along with understanding the different tools needed to perform venipuncture. The anatomy and physiology portion will most likely be very basic. It will involve knowing the muscular and skeletal systems. Along with this the class will go into a detailed understanding of what exactly veins and arteries are, how they work systemically, and where they can be found on the human body. The Phlebotomy course will also teach you everything that you need to know about the different types of needles and tools used for blood drawing. This can range from butterfly needles, catheters, and vacuum sets, specialized tubing, and much more.
You will also need to be CPR certified, every medical professional is expected to know and understand how to do CPR for their patients. Look into different phlebotomy online classes. There is quite a few Phlebotomy online classes that can be taken in order to receive the Phlebotomist certification. These online classes can sometimes be expensive, and may or may not offer clinical hours with the Phlebotomy course, so be sure to inquire. If the Phlebotomy online class that you decide on does not offer clinicals, you can always volunteer at a blood bank or doctors office to receive your hours and work experience.

The usual classes for a Phlebotomist are Anatomy and Physiology, Blood and cell composition, Blood Sampling Procedures, and laboratory safety, Computer training, legal issues.

Anatomy and Physiology - This will be a general overview of anatomy and physiology. The phlebotomist will learn important concepts about the human bodies workings and implement them into their patient care. Understanding blood, veins, and the muscular skeletal system is crucial for the phlebotomist.

Blood and Cell composition - This course will go quite in depth about the blood, our cells and their working. Blood is comprised of red blood cells, white blood cells, plasma and platelets. The Phlebotomist is often testing the levels and workings of these seperate portions of the blood. It is very important for them to be well versed on this material.

Blood Sampling Procedures - This course focuses on how to correctly draw blood from a patient for any given tests. Sometimes samples have very specific ways that they must be drawn, or else the data received from the sample is either false, or skewed. This class teaches a variety of different ways to collect blood samples and how to properly store them for lab testing.

Laboratory Safety - This course is by far one of the most important concepts for a phlebotomist. It is important to always maintain safety for yourself and for the patient. Using proper sterile techniques and safe procedures will help if not erase the danger of harming yourself or the patient.

Phlebotomist actually are not required to be certified, however it is very difficult to get hired without the Certification. After all drawing blood is a rather invasive technique, and most facilities are simply not comfortable hiring someone that does not have the proper education and skills base. The phlebotomy certification lets the facility know that you have completed an accredited course that has given you the skills needed to be successful in the field. There are three different accrediting bodies that you can receive your certification from: American society of pathology, Association of Phlebotomy Technicians, National Phlebotomy Association. It does not necessarily matter which you are certified through, all of them are accepted nation wide.

Each of them however have different demands for their Phlebotomy certification. Each of them require the student to attend a Phlebotomist program, they also require a minimum of 200 hours of classroom and clinical time combined for certification. You will be required to document all venipunctures and blood draws. Be sure that the Phlebotomist program that you attend is accredited and meets the standards for at least one of these certifying boards. Be sure that the program offers a clinical internship or else you will need to gain this experience on your own before receiving your phlebotomy certification. This experience can be found if needed by volunteering at blood centers and or hospitals. Becoming certified with any of these organizations does allow you to work as a Phlebotomist almost anywhere in the United States.

There are some places that have special requirements for practicing phlebotomy, such as california. Take care to make sure that where you live and where you plan to practice accepts the certification you are receiving. The certifying bodies mentioned above do allow for work in the United States in about 90% of the nation. The Certification process is different for each certifying body, so be sure to be well educated on which is best for you and which certifying body your Educating institution is preparing you to certify with. They are all relatively the same, and provide the same professional testing and certifications. If you are however interested in working in California there are three different levels of certification one can get. The payscale for the phlebotomist goes up with each certification, so it is a good idea to get these certs if that is the area you will be practicing in.

Phlebotomist are an integral part of the the health care system. Phlebotomist work and Phlebotomy employment are in an enormous demand in the United States. Phlebotomist work has changed quite a bit over the course of this decade. No longer are they simply responsible for drawing blood. Now a Phlebotomist is responsible for far more. Each blood test that is taken often times has different ways in which it must be done, transported or seperated in order to procure the correct information. It can often times be a very sensitive process, in which the Phlebotomist must be trained and prepared.
The Phlebotomist obtains the blood sample, labels the sample, and quickly delivers it to the hospital, clinic, or doctors office for review. Phlebotomist must also have a basic understanding of medical terminology in order to properly communicate with other medical professionals what their finding were.
While the economy seems to be in a slump, medical professions are actually growing regularly. There will always be a need for medicine and healthcare, so the phlebotomist job is a relatively safe avenue to consider. When choosing whether or not Phlebotomy work is the career for you consider a few things first. Are you skittish around blood or needles?? Many people find blood and needles to be a terrifying, or disgusting things to be around. In Phlebotomy these two things are an everyday part of your career.
Do you have good personal skills? It is important to have strong personal communication skills as a Phlebotomist. For one you are going to have to stick a needle into to someones arm to draw blood, which often times is a very uncomfortable experience. And two, you will be a part of a healthcare team and it is very important that you are able to keep a friendly, professional rapport with your fellow employees.
Phlebotomist work is done in a number of different facilities, it can be done in a hospital, a clinic, blood banks, Blood laboratories, or sometimes even a doctors office. Often times the hospitals are the highest paying jobs in the phlebotomy field, but will also demand quite a bit more from you.
Note that phlebotomy employment has certain dangers that one must be aware of, and be very careful of when working in this field. As we said earlier phlebotomy work often entails needles and blood, which can lead to infections of many different types of viruses and pathogens, HIV and hepatitis being the most dangerous. It is always important to be very careful, and use proper technique when drawing blood from a patient to maintain your safety.
Being a Phlebotomist is a great career, most often people tend to use it as a stepping stone up the healthcare ladder. Many Phlebotomist go on to become RN's, Paramedics, even Doctors. The salary of a phlebotomist can be relatively low at some institutions, so many people tend to use it as a temporary job while they strive for another field.
Phlebotomist are a very important part of the healthcare machine, and will be for many years to come. Phlebotomist work is an ever changing and evolving career, so if you think it is for you, be prepared to evolve with it.
